Congratulations to the winners of the 2019 Energy Blitz Challenge!

Across all participating buildings in the competition, LACC saved 105,796 kWh during the spring semester.  That's huge!

You can see how many kilowatt hours of electricity your building saved in each month of the competition below.

How to read this chart:

Energy usage at the building level is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), which is not the number of kilowatts you're using per hour, but rather a unit of measurement that equals the amount of energy you would use if you kept a 1,000 watt appliance running for an hour.

At LACC, each of the buildings are sub-metered.  That means that even though we are billed for the energy usage of the entire campus, we keep track of how much energy (in kWh) is being used by each building.  Using this data, we are able to compare our current energy consumption to past years' consumption.

There are several reasons why energy consumption might change year to year:

  • Building Occupancy: the number of people occupying the building.

  • Building Schedule: the hours that a building is "on"-- using heat/AC and lighting.  To maximize efficiency, the building schedule should line up with the building occupancy hours.

  • Loads: the amount of energy-using equipment or technology in a building.

  • Generation: if a building is generating and/or storing it's own energy -- through solar panels, turbines, or battery storage -- it's net energy consumption may fluctuate.
